Reflection Post

 Reflection Post

In my final project, I discussed colorism in the criminal justice system. I chose this topic because I feel like there is a lot of confusion on the subject, and it’s important that people have the correct facts before forming their beliefs. My target audience was mainly young adults, so I formatted my project as an Instagram post; I felt this was the best way to reach this age range as I myself am a young adult, so a lot of my followers fall in this age range as well. This was a topic I not only found to be important, but it is one that I am passionate about; sharing the post on social media was very fun for me. I believe trying to reach young adults is important, as we are the future!

I emailed the author of my article and unfortunately never got a response, but maybe they will reach out later! The hardest part of summarizing the article was making sure I had all the essential information in a compacted form. There is a lot of information in research articles, so picking out the parts that are vital was difficult. It was also slightly challenging to take this in-depth study and translate it in a way that could be easily understood without losing the importance of the findings. Translating the factsheet presented the same difficulties. As I had a pretty summarized factsheet, I then had to summarize even more for the Instagram post. Turning a scholarly article into an appealing post required a deep understanding of the article and its key terms/concepts. I had to reread the article numerous times to be sure I was expressing it in the most accurate, but basic, way possible.

I gained a deeper understanding of how prevalent colorism is in the criminal justice system. While we had learned about this in class, it was interesting to engage with a direct study. Disaggregating data from first-time offenders for similar crimes was very eye opening for me, and I hope it was for others as well. There are a lot of misconceptions about this topic, so I really hope to have shed some light on this subject. I hope others truly grasp how the color of one’s skin does unfortunately have an impact on sentencing lengths. Hopefully this project inspired others to learn more about this issue and to take action against unjust actions occurring not just in the criminal justice system, but in our nation as a whole.
